Unlike other areas, Southwest Portland is more of a woven fabric of distinct neighborhoods than a destination itself. Spreading from
downtown, Southwest encompasses the hills, two universities and a whole host of distinct areas that share the name Southwest
Portland. Let's start downtown and work out across the hills to discover Southwest.
Adjacent to downtown is Portland State University, Portland's largest university. Even though its nearby areas comprise the
temporary housing you'd expect near a university, Portland State itself provides a cultural hub for the general area and
Portland as a whole. You can attend lecture series, sporting events, plus the weekend Farmer's Market is one of the
largest in the city where you can sample locally-produced fruits, cheeses, and more.
Between downtown and the hills, Goose Hollow is home to landmarks such as PGE Park and the historic Multnomah Athletic Club,
as well as an active community dedicated to preserving its historic neighborhood appeal. From there, Southwest rises into
the hills, to wonderful homes on tree-lined windy streets with views of the city and mountains. Climbing further, we
arrive at Council Crest, where many top-notch homes sit where the old trolley used to take people up to the amusement
park. From Council Crest Park, you can see five mountains on a clear day.
Over the hill are the Hillsdale and Homestead neighborhoods, nice quiet neighborhoods with lots of kids and families
enjoying life in the foothills around Wilson High. Along the river is John's Landing and the Macadam area, older and
smaller homes surrounding the John's Landing shopping area and nearby Willamette Park. People here enjoy an easy commute
into downtown while staying just a bit outside it.
Inland from the river are the Terwilliger and Burlingame areas, including Lewis & Clark College. Homes here offer
a lot of variety, ranging from 1920s bungalowes to newer homes built within the last decade. Windy roads through the
hills let you imagine you're hours from the urban bustle of downtown, yet it's only a few minutes away. Neighborhoods
further out southwest include Garden Home, Multnomah Village and Raleigh Hills.
Further south on the Willamette River toward Lake Oswego is Dunthorpe, a unique community of stately homes on large lots. The heart of Dunthorpe are the Riverdale Schools, a K-8 grade school and a college prepatory high school that together operate as their own district. Along with the exceptionally recognized schools, families are attracted to Dunthorpe for its community, and convenient location, just five miles from downtown Portland.
